This is a page that serves as an introduction to, and a brief FAQ for, this site.
What is this site?
This site is intended to be a compendium of resources and references primarily for undergraduate students in engineering, but undergraduates in the physical sciences, and even some graduate students should find much of it useful as well. It is definitely a work in progress!
How do you choose what to list on this site?
Given the large amounts of money college students typically don't have, EngiHelp.net has an overwhelming emphasis on free resources. Paid resources are included if they are particularly good, or good while being inexpensive. Some free sites require user registration, and these are noted in the listings here.
I do review materials that are unfamiliar or relatively unknown (for example, I don't think I have to evaluate the quality of materials from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Inevitably, however, some links will slip through that have no business being here. Please let me know about these listings through the Contact page.
In addition, I cannot possibly identify every worthwhile learning resource. Again, please let me know through the Contact page of any I do not (but should) have listed.
Why did you make this site?
My first go-around in college a lifetime ago, there was no publicly available internet. In fact, only a few universities had access at the time. If you had trouble with a particular course or professor, your options were quite limited. Now, with the availability of so much study and reference material, you can get the outside help you need. The problem is that many new students don't even begin to know where to look, nor do they know enough to be able to separate the trash from the treasure. I hope that this website will help make a difference.
Why the odd color scheme?
There are three things at work here:
- My first undergraduate degree (BS Chemistry) was from North Dakota State University, which is still near and dear to my heart. NDSU's colors are green (#005643) and yellow (#FFC82E).
- I am currently studying for a BS in Industrial Engineering through the online program from Mississippi State University. I am having a blast doing it! MSU's colors are maroon (#5D1725), light gray (#C1C6C8), and dark gray (#777777).
- The traditional academic color for engineering students is engineering orange (#FF4F00).
What about privacy?
No cookies are set except for a session id generated by PHP and a few cookies used for CAPTCHA. Any session variables will only be for proper functioning of the site. There is, and never will be, use of session variables or cookies for tracking, marketing, or site statistics.
- You will not be shown targeted ads - because there are not, and will never be, ads on this website.
- Currently, no personal information is collected. Eventually, there may be functionality that will require user registration. However, your information will never be shared or sold. End of story.
How are you making money from this site?
I'm not. This site is a labor of love. I may ask for contributions to offset server costs, but that's about it. I may in the future accept sponsorships, but they will be low-key, and I will still refuse to divulge user information or site statistics to anyone.
I may at some point introduce paid services (I have one in mind) under a different name and brand, but no student will ever be charged money. However, institutions, businesses, and working professionals are a different matter.
